SL Project

Wow Sorry I am so late posting this For my SL project I am running a team for Relay for Life and also volunteering at Orlando day school to help at risk children. Last week I ran a fund raiser called wear what you want for a buck it raised 150 dollars. This week I ran a bake sale and so far we have raised over 300 dollars have not gotten the final count yet. I have many other fund raisers coming up a few I could use so help to get out there to make them more successful I will post them on here we they get closer. I just want to say that I am really enjoying the class and can't wait to continue. All you SL projects sound so interesting and if there is anything I can do to help please let me know.

Service Learning Documentary

So sorry for posting this late!

For my service learning I am going to be documenting my thesis project in Nicaragua. I will be presenting on women's rights in the country and how they have fared since the end of the revolutionary period in 1990.

I am currently working on gathering interviews. I have about 4-5 scheduled in Managua, Nicaragua. I may have a couple in Leon, another major city in Nicaragua. Then I have one scheduled with a former female Sandinista (revolutionary party) activist. I am in the process of confirming interviews and asking for permission to film.

SLP ZINE!

So I'm working on an informational zine about Haiti for my service learning. Amanda has already volunteered to work with me and if anyone else wants to help you're totally welcome. I've already been gathering historical info from various resources but if anyone has new info I'm all ears. The zine will be ready by the end of the semester definetly and possibly before so I can log about the effectiveness of handing it out. I will update mostly on all of the information I'm acquiring.

Service Learning

Hi, I'm Ross, a senior Poli sci major with a WS minor. Sorry I've been such a stranger on the blog so far, I promise that that changes now. I'm an active member of Men Against Rape, a new student organization devoted to fighting rape and destroying the illusion that it is "just a women's issue." I encourage everyone to stop by our meetings on Thursdays at 3 and check us out, or ask me for more info.

Since MAR is mostly about community activism I'll be devoting my SL project to the United Nations Association's International Women's Day event. I've been part of UNA since my junior year and have taken part in several of its philanthropic projects such as fundraising for UNICEF and staging events for International Day of Peace. For IWD we'll be hosting a speaker's panel and a student art show. Submissions are welcome and won't be judged by skill. UNA is working along side the Women's Studies office and is shooting for a high-profile event that will raise awareness about global women's issues.

Service Learning

Hello! So, in the past I have worked on many many things. Since this class, global and transnational feminism, is an upper-level understanding of feminist theory, I am reflecting this within the projects I am taking on. Most have to do with the global community, at least our global neighbors. All in all, they are projects in which a higher-level of commitment, and upper-level understanding of activist work, is needed. Thus far I have assumed a leadership role in the passing of the DREAM act resolution through the UCF student senate. This was a 3 week process. I am also collecting petitions to add to the upcoming elections ballot a vote from students in favor of discontinuing UCF business relations with companies utilizing sweatshop labor. Also, the Genocide Awareness Project is coming to UCF in the next weeks, and I am bottom-lining a section of organized counter-action.

SL Project

For my service learning project, I've decided to put on the sweatshop free fashion show. So far I have Lindsey helping me for sure, and I've got backing from NOW and the Student Labor Action Project. So far I have basic plan thing typed up.

Goals for this week:

Book a room (hopefully for April 15th or 16th)
Create a calendar to follow
Start contacting vendors

Once again, if you're interested, I welcome any and all help. Maybe we can get a small committee going or something.

Service Learning

I plan on doing a movie screening with Jaime and Amanda at Stardust in Winter Park, or another location if that location isn't available. The film will demonstrate womyn from around the world and the issues that are facing. We'll take donations and send all of the proceeds to an organization that supports the issues in the film. We aren't sure what film we want to show yet, but we are currently searching for that.

SL update #1

For my service-learning project I’ve decided to work with the Young Women’s Leadership Program (YWLP). I’ve attended the training as well as one “big sister” meeting thus far. This past Wednesday I met my “little sister” and we really hit it off. I’m really looking forward to continuing the program and becoming closer with Jazlyn (my little). So far I’ve put in 9 hours with YWLP and it’s only the beginning of the semester, so I’ll definitely end up putting more than fifteen hours into this service learning project.

I’m still not completely sure how I plan on tying this into the global community, other than that YWLP focuses on diversity amongst girls, as well as teaching cultural acceptance within our own community.

SL Post 1

Hello everyone!

This week, I emailed Bianca regarding the sweatshop-free fashion show. I was thinking if we need a venue, the History Center where I volunteer rents rooms. I have no idea if the one room they have available now will be big enough though.

I am also looking for various places to volunteer in the global arena.

I am open to suggestions :D

SLP@NOW

I went to my first NOW meeting last Friday, it was very organized, informative & fun. There were a lot of future events outlined that I'm looking forward to volunteering for/at, including Take Back the Night, a Natura benefit, a sweatshop-free fashion show, etc.etc.

Everyone involved had a great rapport & seemed really excited to start all this stuff, so I highly recommend joining to anyone with free Fridays.
